Finding out you’re pregnant as a teenager can feel scary. Along with processing your own emotions, you may be wondering how you’re ever going to tell your parents.

Maybe you’re afraid they’ll be angry. Perhaps you’re worried you’ll disappoint them or that they’ll immediately tell you what they think you should do. These fears are common, and if you’re feeling anxious about the conversation, you’re not alone.

Although telling your parents may seem like the hardest part, many young women find that the anticipation is worse than the conversation itself. While you can’t control how your parents will respond, you can prepare for the conversation in a way that helps everyone communicate more openly.

Read on to learn more, or contact Turlock Pregnancy and Health Center to find a safe space to talk and get answers.

Confirm Your Pregnancy Before You Have the Conversation

Before telling your parents, make sure you know whether you’re actually pregnant.

If you’ve taken a home pregnancy test and it’s positive, your next step should be to schedule a medical-grade pregnancy test and an ultrasound.

An ultrasound can determine:

  • Whether the pregnancy is located inside the uterus (and not ectopic).
  • Whether the pregnancy appears to be developing (or if you’ve miscarried).
  • Approximately how far along you are.

Having this information allows you to answer some of the questions your parents are likely to ask and gives you a clearer understanding of your pregnancy before discussing your options.

If you haven’t taken a pregnancy test yet but think you might be pregnant, start there. Having accurate medical information can help you approach the conversation feeling more confident.

Choose the Right Time and Be Honest

There isn’t a “perfect” time to tell your parents, but choosing a calm, private moment can make the conversation easier.

Try to avoid bringing it up during an argument or when everyone is rushing out the door. Instead, choose a time when you can sit down together without interruptions.

You don’t need to have all the answers before you talk with them.

You might simply say:

  • “I need to tell you something important.”
  • “I think I’m pregnant, and I’m scared.”
  • “I really need your support right now.”

Be honest about how you’re feeling. If you don’t know what you’re going to do next, it’s okay to say that. This conversation is about letting your parents know what’s happening, not giving them a laid-out plan.

Remember that your parents may need time to process the news, just as you did. Their first reaction may come from surprise or concern rather than a lack of love for you.

Don’t Let Anyone Rush You Into a Decision

Once your parents know you’re pregnant, they may have strong opinions about what they think you should do.

Some parents encourage parenting. Others may suggest adoption. Some may pressure their daughter to have an abortion because they’re worried about school, finances, or what others will think.

While it’s important to listen to the people who love you, it’s also important to make sure you’re making your own informed decision.

Take time to learn about all of your pregnancy options. Ask questions. Gather accurate medical information. Think about your own values, goals, and circumstances.

No one should pressure you into a decision you’re not comfortable making.

If you ever feel like you’re being rushed or that no one is listening to your concerns, it’s okay to seek guidance from someone outside your family who can provide information and support without trying to decide for you.
