Women’s rights have been a trending topic since the Supreme Court reversed Roe vs. Wade back in June 2022. The question of how this reversal may impact women’s rights moving forward is valid.
After reading this blog, we hope you come away feeling empowered and secure as a woman living in America today.
What Does The New Ruling Mean?
Understanding the details of the Court’s decision to overturn Roe will help set a solid foundation to build truth.
The original 1973 verdict of Roe vs. Wade stated that a woman had a constitutional right to an abortion. In June of 2022, the Supreme Court ruled that the 1973 verdict was in error.
Abortion laws are now decided at the state level. Every state representative is responsible for passing laws regarding how and when abortions should be performed.
Overturning Roe did not make all abortions illegal in the United States.
Are Women’s Lives At Risk Now?
Women’s lives remain valued and protected in all 50 states following the removal of Roe vs. Wade. While some state lawmakers have voted to ban elective abortions, women will not be denied life-saving treatments. These treatments can include but are not limited to ectopic pregnancy removal and terminal maternal situations.
Ectopic Pregnancy
An ectopic pregnancy is a rare but serious pregnancy complication. It occurs when a fertilized egg implants and begins to grow outside of the uterus. Ectopic pregnancies are not viable, meaning they will spontaneously rupture and must be removed.
Removing an ectopic pregnancy is not an abortion. Women in all 50 states will continue to have the right to have an ectopic pregnancy removed safely and efficiently.
Terminal Maternal Circumstances
Another rare scenario concerning women’s rights is a terminal diagnosis in pregnancy. Imagine a woman is 14 weeks pregnant, and her doctors discover she has stage 3 cancer. A woman in this kind of life-threatening situation will continue to have the right to choose her life over her pregnancy.
The Right To Health
Above all, women’s right to healthcare will continue to be protected and secure in the days after Roe. This is a time of change for the nation, but women’s rights are not changing with it.
Women who may experience an unexpected pregnancy will always have a safe place of support. At Turlock Pregnancy and Health Center, we meet women where they are by offering ultrasounds, STI treatments, and support groups.
