Many have asked, “How will the overturning of Roe vs. Wade affect my state?” Media platforms have reported about trigger laws and the states who were immediately affected by the verdict, but what about California?

We’ve collected everything you need to know about California state laws and how abortions will be impacted in the state moving forward.

California Post Roe

On June 24, 2022, The Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution does not confer a woman’s right to abortion. This new ruling means that each state now has the responsibility and authority to decide how and if abortions should be performed.

California state laws protect a woman’s right to abortion. Abortions will remain fully legal in the state of California following the overturning of Roe vs. Wade. Essentially, nothing will change in regards to abortion for the state of California.

California state laws allow abortions to be performed up until the pregnancy’s viability, which is typically around 20-24 weeks. The law also allows for abortions to be performed after the point of viability if the life of the mother is threatened or at risk.

Best Practices For Wellness

Because California is essentially unaffected by the overturning of Roe vs. Wade, it is important to understand the best path to wellness if you or someone you know is experiencing an unplanned pregnancy.

Before committing to a termination procedure, it is best to schedule an ultrasound. An ultrasound reveals how many weeks your pregnancy is and can determine if you have naturally miscarried, which happens to about 10-20% of all pregnancies.

Additionally, it is wise to be tested for STDs even if you are experiencing no symptoms. Many STDs are asymptomatic but can result in serious health complications if left untreated for an extended amount of time.
